Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a fresh package of support for Ukraine during a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the G7 summit in Kananaskis on Tuesday, pledging Canada’s backing will remain “unwavering.” The new support includes over $2 billion in additional military aid, including drones, helicopters, and ammunition, another $2 billion disbursed from frozen Russian assets, and new sanctions targeting more than 40 Russian entities and over 200 vessels used to circumvent international restrictions. “This is our contribution,” Carney said, “and we will be working with our European and other allies… until we get a just peace for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.” Zelenskiy, who arrived at the summit a day after U.S. President Donald Trump left early to address the crisis in the Middle East, thanked Carney and Canadians for their continued backing. “We are ready for peace negotiations, for an unconditional ceasefire,” Zelenskiy said, “but for this we need pressure. And of course, I want to speak… about additional sanctions.” Zelenskiy emphasised that Ukraine’s ability to remain strong on the battlefield depends on continued Western military support.
