Polish woman Viktoria Kowalska is imprisoned in a concentration camp where she befriends Karin Dernakova, who dreams of reuniting with her son. After Karin dies, Viktoria assumes her identity and escapes, eventually traveling to New York. There she meets and marries Alan Spender, who is the guardian of the boy she has taken on as Karin. As the story unfolds, Viktoria discovers that Alan is planning to murder his son and the estate’s heir to inherit the fortune. She confronts him, leading to a deadly confrontation in which Alan is killed. Viktoria then leaves the house with her new husband Marc Bennett and the boy, beginning a new life.
