George Dennison meets a young woman, Anne, who looks like his murdered wife Claire. He brings her to his home, but the family is hostile and has secrets. In the early 19th century, a villa hosts an English community where Claire and her son Robert are murdered by a mysterious killer. Convinced that the murderer is one of the family members, George devises a plan to unmask the culprit. He brings Anne, who resembles Claire, to the villa and announces their imminent marriage. Anne is treated as an outsider and faces contempt, while George struggles to find clues; everyone seems guilty, but the final revelation is bitter.
