The video reveals that many Ukrainian surnames trace back to old trades. For instance, Gontar means a roofer, Kushnir a cloak maker, Limar and RimAr were horse harness makers, Dimkar carved patterns on cloth to make dimka, Povoroznyk made ropes, Shnitsar and Snitsar were woodcarvers, Stel'makh built wagons, and the ancestors of modern Bondarenko and Bodnar families produced bodni, a type of garment. In western regions the craft was called bodnar, while in the east it was called bondar due to phonetic confusion.
