Today, on our 4k Czech Republic walk, we will visit the historic city of Český Krumlov during the Five-Petalled Rose Festival for the first time after a two-year pause due to quarantine. You will see the solemn procession itself in the following video, but for now, enjoy the views of the city. Český Krumlov is a town in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Its historic center, with the Český Krumlov Castle complex, is protected by law as an urban monument reservation and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 because of its well‑preserved Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. The area has been inhabited since the Older Stone Age, with evidence of Bronze Age, Celtic, and early Slavic settlements. Trade routes along the Vltava passed through the territory in the Early Middle Ages. The castle was founded shortly before 1250 by a local branch of the noble Vítkovci family, descendants of Witiko of Prčice. The first written mention of Český Krumlov dates to 1253. The town was established in two stages: the first part, Latrán, built below the castle, and the second part, Old Town, founded as a new settlement. Since its foundation, Czech and German nationalities have been represented, and a Jewish community has been documented since 1334. In 1302 the Vítkovci line became extinct. King Wenceslaus II acquired the estate and castle by escheat and ceded it to the Rosenberg family, who made it their primary residence. Peter I of Rosenberg had the upper castle erected in the early 14th century. Under his rule, the Rosenberg estates flourished, and Český Krumlov reached its greatest prosperity in the 15th century during the reign of Oldřich II of Rosenberg. The Rosenbergs promoted trade and crafts within the town walls, and in the late 15th century, gold was found near the town, attracting German miners and shifting the ethnic balance. In 1555, William of Rosenberg unified the separate parts of Latrán and Old Town, and in the late 16th century he had the castle rebuilt in the Renaissance style.
