The Arzamas railway disaster occurred on 4 June 1988 when a freight train carrying explosives exploded near Arzamas I station on the Gorky Railway. The blast destroyed 151 houses, left 823 families homeless, killed 91 people—including 17 children—and injured about 1,500. It also caused extensive damage to infrastructure: the railway track, station, power lines, gas pipeline, hospitals, schools, and shops. The cause was never conclusively determined; theories ranged from accidental detonation of the explosives, gas‑pipeline failure, to sabotage or terrorist acts. A government commission investigated the incident, but no definitive cause was established.
