Pepe le Moko, a notorious thief in Algiers, evades capture while the police, led by Janvier, attempt to bring him to justice. He is pursued through the labyrinthine Casbah, where he encounters Gaby, a French tourist, and Ines, a woman in love with him. As the police set traps and use a young accomplice as bait, Pepe navigates betrayals and love affairs. The climax sees him arrested and shot by Slimane's men, ending his escape and leaving a legacy that inspired later films such as Casablanca.
