The art-style known as "Art Deco" has proved to be a catalyst and icon of the 1920s and 1930s. Noted for its geometric patterns, streamlined appearance, and evoking a feeling of efficiency, luxury, modernism, and futurism, everything from architecture, fashion, automobiles, and railroads were affected by art deco's vast popularity. Art Deco in the 1930s would lead to another style known as Art or Streamline Moderne, resulting in some of the finest streamlined locomotives and trains in the world. While Art Deco has since fallen out of style, its influence could be found in mid‑20th‑century minimalist and modernist art and eventually the modern day world of streamlined high‑speed trains. In this video I’ll be going over how Art Deco managed to influence the world’s railways and their design choices ranging from advertising and promotional material, locomotives, rolling stock, and infrastructure.
