From the archives: Jimmy Carter's 1980 State of the Union address

In his State of the Union address on January 23, 1980, President Jimmy Carter addressed the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and outlined what became known as the "Carter Doctrine," a policy that stated the U.S. would defend its interests in the Persian Gulf with military force if necessary.
