The UK, France, and Germany (the E3) have warned they will reimpose UN sanctions on Iran’s nuclear programme if it does not resume negotiations by the end of August 2025. In a letter to UN chief António Guterres, the foreign ministers said they were prepared to trigger the “snapback” mechanism, restoring previous sanctions, after Iran failed to respond to an offer to extend talks. Iran has threatened to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal if new sanctions are imposed. The standoff follows Iran’s suspension of cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, enrichment of uranium near weapons grade, and recent military clashes involving Israel and the US, the BBC has reported. The 2015 deal, which limited Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief, is due to expire in October.
