In 1934, art dealer Eben Adam meets a young girl named Jennie Appleton, who claims her parents were vaudeville actors. He paints her portrait, but she vanishes, leaving him to search for her. He learns that Jennie's parents died in a high‑wire accident and she was sent to a convent. Years later, he discovers Jennie drowned in a tidal wave off Cape Cod. Determined to rescue her, Eben rents a boat and attempts to cross time to the spot of her death, but the storm overwhelms him and Jennie is lost again.
