Beschreibung:

Kaysersberg, formerly an independent commune in the Haut‑Rhône department of the Grand Est region, became part of the new municipality Kaysersberg Vignoble on 1 January 2016. Located in the historic Alsace region, the village has long been a strategic crossroads between Upper Alsace and Lorraine, a fact that has shaped its military and commercial history since Roman times. The fortress built around 1218 marked the beginning of a golden age under the Hohenstaufen, and in 1293 Kaysersberg was granted Reichsstadt status. During the 14th and 15th centuries it prospered as a member of the Decapole, hosting weekly and annual markets and exporting wine throughout the Empire. After the devastation of the Thirty‑Year’s War, the town recovered in the late 17th century, and the 19th and 20th centuries saw the rise of textile industry and the impact of the Second World War. Today the village is celebrated for its Romanesque church, stone fortifications, cobbled streets, timber‑framed houses, and frescoes by Maurice Denis, all of which testify to a rich cultural and architectural heritage that continues to attract visitors.
