Meet the ex-ADG of Jammu & Kashmir, Shiv Murari Sahai, who was shot at multiple times during his 30-year stint in the state. He witnessed the first pro-terror upsurge in Kashmir in the late 1980s and the beastly violence that chased out Kashmiri Pandits in the early 1990s. His tenure from ASP Kashmir in 1990 to Additional DG in 2013 includes tackling the stone pelting mobs, the return of violence in the mid-2000s, and the outreach to the youth to wean them away from violence. Sahai had several close shaves while fighting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. In December 2003, when he was posted as DIG Rajouri, Sahai survived a fidayeen attack. Before that he had narrowly escaped firing aimed at him at Srinagar's Lal Chowk area. One of his initiatives was to show the youth the possibilities including the civil services. In 2009, Shah Faesal was one such success story when he became the first Kashmiri topper of the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Sahai dislikes the use of the word 'supercop'. He says "the Ramboisation of a few" does not yield results on the ground. He is a firm believer that, "Kashmir is a commitment for all IPS officers, it's not a job". In the wake of the April 22 terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, SM Sahai spoke with Rahul Shrivastava on The Curious Mic. Sahai maintains that the attack exposed "lapses" in security. But he also warned that "follow-up strikes" cannot be ruled out.
