Russia attacks Ukraine with record 700 drones after Trump weapons pledge

U.S. President Donald Trump pledged to send more defensive weapons to Ukraine this week, reversing a recent Pentagon decision to delay key munitions shipments. The announcement followed Russia’s largest drone attack since the war began, with 728 launched overnight, according to Ukraine’s air force. Most were reportedly intercepted, including by electronic jamming. The northwestern city of Lutsk was the main target, with damage reported in 10 other regions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for tougher sanctions on Russian revenues fueling the war. Trump, who has softened U.S. rhetoric on Ukraine in recent months, criticised Vladimir Putin directly and said he was weighing support for a Senate bill imposing 500% tariffs on countries importing Russian oil, gas and uranium. Despite earlier delays in U.S. arms support, Trump's new pledge signals a renewed push to assist Ukraine’s defence.
