In a moving hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) speaks to his companion Mu'az ibn Jabal about Allah's rights over His servants and the rights of servants towards Allah. He explains that Allah's right is that His servants worship Him alone and not associate partners with Him, and that the servants' right is that Allah will not punish those who worship Him alone. The hadith underscores the purpose of creation, that humans and jinn were made to worship Allah, and highlights the greatest promise of Allah: if a person maintains pure monotheism, Allah grants forgiveness and salvation. The narration emphasizes that Allah does not need us but has honored us with worship, that He has bound Himself to mercy, and that every sincere declaration of 'There is no god but Allah' is rewarded. Even Satan, knowing Allah, refused to worship, and his knowledge did not save him. Those who submit to Allah and purify their worship receive the promise that Allah will not punish those who worship Him alone, reminding us of mercy stronger than fear.
