The Golden snub-nosed monkey was nearly wiped out following widespread deforestation in the remote mountains of central China, but the species is now seeing a bounce back thanks to a preservation plan. The big push on preservation came in 2005 when Professor Yang, director of the Shennongjia National Park Scientific Research Institute, and a small group of others formed a specialist study team. Although it has been hard to get numbers up, the figure of 500 monkeys has now become more than 1,600, and they hope it will pass 2,000 within 10 years.
