On a sunny day, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) winds through dramatic gorges, lofty viaducts, and narrow rock ledges, passing through tunnels and emerging into breathtaking vistas. Built by the British in 1908, the 46‑km metre‑gauge rack railway is India's only operational rack line and was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2005. Steam locomotives run between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, while diesel engines serve the Coonoor–Udhagamandalam section. The line features steep gradients up to 8 % and uses the Abt rack‑and‑pinion system; the X‑Class 0‑8‑2RT locomotives, originally acquired from Swiss manufacturers and later built in India, are the main steam engines, with recent conversions to oil‑firing to reduce fire risk. The journey showcases the engineering marvels and natural beauty of the Nilgiri Hills. Map 00:20 – Google Earth/Maps.
