Former Ukrainian politician shot dead in Madrid

Unidentified gunmen shot dead former Ukrainian politician Andriy Portnov outside the American School of Madrid on Wednesday, May 21. Police received calls at 9:15 a.m. about a man with gunshot wounds. Attempts to revive him failed due to the severity of his injuries. Portnov, a former senior aide to ex‑president Viktor Yanukovich, had left for Russia in 2014 and faced investigations in Ukraine. He had been targeted with EU sanctions, which were later dropped. Since Russia’s invasion, several high‑profile crimes involving Russia and Ukraine have occurred in Spain.
