In 1950s London, Dutch artist Jan Van Rooyen meets Frenchwoman Jacqueline Cousteau, and they begin a clandestine affair. When Jacqueline is found murdered in her flat, Jan becomes the prime suspect. Inspector Morgan interrogates him, uncovering their relationship and the fact that Jacqueline was not married but was involved with a high‑ranking diplomat, Sir Howard Fenton. The investigation reveals that the dead woman was actually a nightclub singer who had assumed Jacqueline’s identity, and a £500 pay‑off was found in Jan’s pocket. The film explores themes of class, corruption, and the murky underbelly of London society.
