Kaysersberg is a historic French commune located in the Haut‑Rhin department of the Grand Est region, within the culturally rich Alsace area. The village, which became a municipality in 2016, is known for its picturesque half‑timber houses, cobblestone streets, Roman church, stone fortifications, and the murals of Maurice Denis. Its strategic position on the Col du Bonhomme allowed control of transit between Haute Alsace and Lorraine, and the town’s history dates back to Roman times. A castle was built around 1218, marking the beginning of a prosperous era under the House of Hohenzollern. By 1293, Kaysersberg had become a city of the Holy Roman Empire, and in the 14th and 15th centuries it flourished thanks to market rights and annual fairs. The town was part of the Décapole, a union of ten Alsatian cities, and its wine production was exported throughout the empire. After the devastation of the Thirty‑Year War, the village rebounded in the late 17th century, and the 19th century saw the arrival of textile industries. In the 20th century, Kaysersberg suffered partial destruction during World War II. Today, the village remains a beautiful destination, celebrated for its unique architecture and rich cultural heritage.
