His career began in documentaries while shooting active combat in El Salvador, which caught the attention of Oliver Stone. Their partnership yielded films such as Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, The Doors, and Nixon. Later, he collaborated with Martin Scorsese on Bringing Out the Dead, The Aviator, Hugo, and others, and has worked with Quentin Tarantino on Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Despite working with such visionary auteurs, Robert Richardson has been able to bring a unique style to his cinematography, employing bright overhead lighting, balletic tracking shots, and colored lighting. With zero signs of slowing down, Richardson remains an unsung hero working with these mainstream auteurs. He understands that his job is to support the director’s vision, revealing layers of humility and true collaboration at the heart of his work.
