Poland’s president vetoes legislation to prolong benefits for Ukrainian refugees

Poland’s new president, Karol Nawrocki, has vetoed legislation to extend welfare benefits for Ukrainian refugees, arguing only those in work should receive child payments. The veto blocks a bill that would have prolonged the current system until 2026, sparking criticism from Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government, which warned it punishes vulnerable families. Around 1 million Ukrainians, mostly women and children, live in Poland. The move reflects growing anti‑Ukrainian sentiment, despite studies showing refugees benefit the economy. Nawrocki also vowed to propose new laws tightening assistance and banning the promotion of Ukrainian nationalist leader Stepan Bandera, The Guardian has reported. The veto has deepened a political standoff between the president and government.
