Anđelka Bojanić, a young lawyer and war orphan raised by her aunt, seeks love and her place in a patriarchal society set in 1936 Yugoslavia. She marries judge Tom Đurović, a conservative Montenegrin, but the marriage ends after the first night when she reveals she had lost her innocence before marriage, a social taboo at the time. Unable to forgive her, Tom divorces her. Anđelka moves to Trebinje for work to escape gossip in Belgrade, where she meets new people and confronts ghosts from her past. The story intertwines her childhood friend Nenad Aleksić, now an aviator, and his family in Belgrade, showing how fate ultimately brings them together.
