Sanctuary in Brazil comes to the rescue of pumas threatened by urban sprawl | AFP

Just a few dozen kilometers from Sao Paulo, Latin America's largest metropolis, pumas are seeing humans encroach more and more on their natural habitat. As a result, they face the risk of being hit by cars, electrocuted, poisoned, trapped, or shot by poachers. Brazil is home to the greatest diversity of wild cats in the world, with nine documented species. All of them are endangered due to human activity, particularly unchecked urban sprawl.
