A traveling American carnival arrives in Munich, where local woman Willi becomes involved with carny Joe Hammond. After Joe finds her a job in the cookhouse, Willi is drawn to high‑diver Frank Collini, who teaches her the dive and proposes. Willi chooses Frank over Joe, and they marry. Photographer Bill Vines documents the carnival’s rise, but Frank later dies in a tragic dive accident. Bill’s photos bring fame, yet Joe returns, steals Willi’s money, and attempts to harm her. In a confrontation, strongman Groppo kills Joe, and Willi recovers with Bill’s support, though the carnival’s fortunes wane and it moves to Frankfurt.
