The film follows Sergeant Suleiman Al‑Salan, a soldier on a mission in northern Iraq, who experiences a traumatic incident that he perceives as an insult to military honor. Unable to endure it, he writes a letter to intelligence officer Murad Al‑Madar and then takes his own life. Murad, unable to ignore the soldier’s final request, leads his men northward. Directed by Sardar Akbar, the 2006 production won a special jury prize at Cannes and is considered the largest Turkish film ever made. Filmed in four languages with 3,000 extras, it features a Turkish cast that includes Hollywood actors such as Billy Zayn and Gary Busi.
