Description :

In 1936 the western regions of Belarus are engulfed in revolutionary activity. Young insurgent Andrei Metelsky, sent by the communist underground, travels to warn peasants about police forces and a planned demonstration. On the way he is severely wounded and, while unconscious, reaches the home of retired Major Pan Shipshinsky, where his fiancée Stasya works as a servant. Stasya claims Andrei is her brother, and Shipshinsky initially believes her. In a delirious state, Andrei reveals the address and password, leading Shipshinsky to inform the police, but the gendarmes fail to capture him. The underground center, with the password "The old man collects red leaves, there will be no holiday," is run by a man who calls himself Andrei Metelsky, a role played by actor Yermalovich. He insists on an immediate peasant uprising. Along the way, crowds march with slogans demanding bread and land, while in the forest the executioners hide behind machine guns and open fire on unarmed peasants. Bourgeois newspapers praise Andrei Metelsky, while the underground center accuses him of treason and sentences him to death. The real Metelsky barely escapes a bullet from his comrades. A trial of arrested communists takes place, with "Metelsky"‑Yermalovich as a witness. Suddenly, Stasia’s voice from the back rows declares, "This is not Andrei Metelsky!" A man enters the hall, his right hand hidden behind his jacket, and shoots him. Metelsky is sentenced to death, but a wave of demonstrations spreads across the country. In train depots, factories, and peasant huts people speak of Metelsky, demanding his release. Minutes before his execution, the communists announce a pardon. The story centers on Sergey Prititsky, a young revolutionary fighting for the reunification of Belarus, who in 1936, in the Vilnius court, carried out the death sentence against the provocateur, suffering severe injury, arrest, and a death sentence later commuted to life imprisonment. The film became a hit on Soviet screens, drawing 33.14 million viewers in 1958.
