Alexey Alexeevich Glazov, a hereditary gardener, cultivates apples in a kolkhoz orchard founded by his grandfather. He freely sent apple cuttings to people who requested them, but was investigated by the district prosecutor for alleged illegal trade of socialist property. The money sent to him was returned, and the case was closed. The orchard was economically unprofitable, and the land was slated for a poultry complex. Workers for harvesting were scarce, and there was no storage for produce. Glazov devoted much of his life to the orchard, sacrificing his own well-being and that of his family. His two children, living elsewhere, did not need the orchard, but his brother-in-law, Kolya Steklov, and a mute teenager, Sanka, were the only ones who valued it.
