Jean (Barbara Stanwyck) flirts with Charles (Henry Fonda), giving him some new nicknames. In Preston Sturges' classic romantic comedy, the two star actors engage in a scintillating battle of the sexes, with Sturges highlighting the terrors of sexual passion and the unattainability of the romantic ideal. Charles Pike, heir to the Pike Ale fortune and a snake expert who has spent a year in the Amazon, arrives aboard the S.S. Southern Queen bound for New York. He quickly becomes the focus of a group of single women, including the con‑artist trio of Colonel Handsome Harry Harrington, his partner Gerald, and the Colonel's daughter Jean. While the women ogle him, Jean wins the evening by tripping him and then persuades him to escort her to her cabin to replace a broken heel. Charles is attracted to Jean, but she pulls back, telling him, "You ought to be put in a cage." The next day, Charles wins money from the Colonel and Jean in a card game, but the Colonel plans to double‑or‑nothing him for $32,000. Jean, angry with her father, tears up Charles' check. The following morning, Muggsy warns Charles that the Colonel and Jean are cardsharks, but he ignores the warning. Charles is devastated when he learns Jean is a con artist, and Jean vows revenge. Docking in New York, the Colonel reveals he merely palmed the $32,000 check, but Jean, impersonating an aristocratic Englishwoman named Lady Eve Sidwich, introduces herself to Charles again, hoping to make him fall in love with her and break his heart as he broke hers. She explains, "I've got some unfinished business with him – I need him like the axe needs the turkey."
