Drone captures aftermath of Spain's wildfire destruction

Scorching heat continues to fuel wildfires across Spain, with at least 20 major blazes reported on Sunday, August 17. The Spanish government has deployed an additional 500 troops from its military emergency unit to support overwhelmed firefighters. Drone footage from Palacios de Jamuz shows charred buildings and scorched countryside, as residents returned to assess the damage. Local woman Valentina Vidal described the sense of helplessness as she fled to a sports centre for shelter, while Delia Lobato reflected on both the lives lost and the destruction of homes and forests. Spain is enduring one of its worst wildfire seasons in two decades. In the past week alone, fires have claimed three lives and destroyed more than 115,000 hectares of land.
