The European Union is seeking "fair competition" with China, not a race to the bottom in wages and environmental standards, says the bloc's vice president for a clean transition, Teresa Ribera, in Beijing ahead of this month's EU-China summit. Frictions over economic relations exist between the 27-nation bloc and China, with Brussels worried that excessive manufacturing propelled by large state subsidies could add to a yawning trade deficit and result in cheap Chinese goods undercutting European firms.
