Kerman, also known as Kermān, is the capital of Kerman Province in Iran. It is the 10th most populous city in the country, with a population of 821,374 as of the 2011 census. The city is the largest and most developed in the province and an important cultural center in southeastern Iran. It has a long history and is home to historic mosques and Zoroastrian fire temples. Kerman is located on a flat plain 1,036 km south of Tehran and sits at an elevation of 1,755 meters. Historically, it was known as Harmozia and later Hormuz, and its name may derive from the Germaniol race mentioned by Herodotus. The city was founded by Ardashir I of the Sassanid Dynasty in the 3rd century CE.
