Minneapolis Mayor's emotionally charged speech after deadly school shooting

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey gave an emotionally charged speech after a gunman opened fire on schoolchildren who, according to authorities, were attending Mass at a Minneapolis Catholic school. He said children "should be able to go to school or church in peace without the fear or risk of violence." At least two children have been killed after a gunman shot "dozens of rounds" through the windows of a church in the US while schoolchildren were praying. The incident occurred at 8.30am, local time, on Wednesday morning (11.30pm AEDT) August 27th 2025 in Minneapolis in the Midwestern state of Minnesota. It was the first day of the school year. Police have confirmed that two children died – one aged eight and the other 10 – while 17 people were injured, 14 of them children and three aged in their 80s. Seven children are in a critical condition.
