Carcassonne, a medieval city in southwestern France, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is surrounded by two concentric walls and a central castle. Inside the walls lies a small village with historic buildings dating back to the 12th century. The inner wall is taller, while the outer wall is lower, providing two layers of protection. The main entrance leads to a fortified gate with a barbican, stone walls on both sides, and a hanging bridge that creates an effective barrier at potential weak points, preventing attackers. We will discuss this gate later as we walk along the walls and circle the fortress. First, we enter the city and stroll along its charming streets, browsing shops and getting an overall orientation. After passing the gate, you will be on the main street of the city. The gate is for pedestrians; cars are not allowed into the old town except for some official vehicles and local residents. You will feel very satisfied walking along the narrow streets inside the village. The city is not a large city; the village itself is about 400 meters long and more than 200 meters wide, making it easy to walk around and feel the pleasant atmosphere throughout the place. However, there are plenty of things to explore for a full day or even two days. Few places in the world have such a profound impact on imagination, beauty, and history as the old walled city of Carcassonne, especially when you walk along its walls. We will return to the 13th century when the city was attacked by the Pope of Rome. That exciting story will be discussed later. The city offers a historical program featuring costumed guides for visitors and local schoolchildren. There is something about the castle that appeals to the child in all of us. The atmosphere truly evokes the romance of the past, and it becomes even more so thanks to the costumed guides who perform for young children and tell some legends related to the spectacular Carcassonne castle. Behind the walls, there is a functioning city with shops, a few small hotels, and 50 houses for local residents, with a small plaza in the middle or several outdoor terrace restaurants, and a wide pedestrian zone that you definitely want to explore. The main street we walk through can make some visitors busy for hours, perhaps even days, especially in this block. There are many shops, mostly souvenirs, but also a variety of goods, clothing, and food. One of the most beautiful and popular places in the city is Place Marcou, with outdoor restaurants and bars, cafés, and tables around it. It is a pleasant place. The atmosphere is quiet outside meal hours, but during lunch and dinner it becomes very busy. Let's see at night, and you will see people enjoying delicious food and refreshing drinks. It's not just for visitors; local residents also come down to enjoy the atmosphere.
