As a spin‑off of the Horizon series, it was released by Sony Interactive Entertainment in February 2023 as a launch title for the PlayStation VR2 headset. The game is played from a first‑person perspective. Ryas, the protagonist, is a master at climbing and archery, equipped with a hunter bow to defeat robotic creatures. While largely linear, the game offers multiple paths for exploration and approach to objectives. As players progress, they unlock additional tools and gear, improving exploration and combat efficiency. In addition to the main story, the game features a scenic mode called “River Ride,” a guided tour of the landscape. The story follows Ryas, a former Shadow Carja rebel sentenced to atone for his crimes by joining an expedition to investigate a new threat to the Sundom. During his journey, Ryas meets numerous new and returning characters, including franchise protagonist Aloy.
