Let’s put an end to the myth that someone has received a Nobel Prize for fasting. No one has. Autophagy is always active, but it works more vigorously when you are in an energy deficit and when you train. Fasting can create that energy deficit, which is why it is linked to autophagy. In 2016, a scientist named Yusnori Osumi was awarded the Nobel Prize for studying autophagy in yeast and identifying the genes responsible for the process; this has no direct connection to fasting. Some cancer cells do not rely on glucose and can thrive on ketones, so a ketogenic diet and fasting may not be effective for all cancers. Animal studies have shown promising results for fasting in preventing Alzheimer’s disease, but human data are still lacking. A controlled study found no specific health benefit of fasting compared to simply reducing calorie intake. You can eat infrequently but in large portions, even more than if you ate more often. The claim that frequent meals benefit food sellers does not hold up. Meal frequency is not linked to the rate of aging; the more you eat, the faster you age, and fasting may not necessarily lead to a calorie deficit.
