Beer can act as an isotonic drink, especially after a normal workout where plain water suffices to replenish electrolytes and fluids. However, if you’ve been running in the heat for a couple of hours, an isotonic beverage like beer may be a reasonable option. Beer also lowers cortisol levels due to its carbohydrate content, which can help reduce stress hormones. On the downside, alcohol in beer reduces protein synthesis—studies show a 37% drop when consuming 1.5 g of alcohol per kilogram of body weight, which is far more than the amount found in a typical bottle of beer. Alcohol also negatively affects sleep quality, increases cancer risk, and has other adverse side effects. Therefore, drinking a few beers once a week is unlikely to have a significant negative impact, but daily consumption after every workout is not advisable; opting for non‑alcoholic beer is a better choice if you enjoy the taste.
