Riyad, once a modest tribal settlement in the harsh Najd region, rose to prominence through the alliance between Muhammad bin Saud and the Wahhabi movement, which established the first Saudi state in Diriyah. Ottoman forces later destroyed Diriyah, but the Al Saud returned to found a second emirate centered on Riyad, only to be toppled by the Rashidi dynasty. In 1902, Abdulaziz bin Saud seized the Masmak fortress, igniting the foundation of modern Saudi Arabia, which he expanded by unifying the Najd tribes and annexing regions such as Al‑Hasa, Asir, and the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, culminating in the proclamation of the Kingdom in 1932. The 1938 oil discovery transformed Riyad from a desert town into a political and economic hub, spurring rapid growth and the construction of skyscrapers, a metro, and ambitious projects under Vision 2030 aimed at positioning the city as a global brand rivaling Dubai.
