Al‑Fath (Arabic: الفتح, al‑fatḥ; meaning: "The Victory") is the 48th chapter of the Qur’an with 29 verses. It was revealed in Medina in the sixth year of the Hijrah, on the occasion of the Treaty of Hudaybiya between the Muslim city‑state of Madinah and Makkan polytheists. The surah mentions this victory, criticises the attitudes of the hypocrites, continues with further promises to the Muslims, and ends by highlighting certain important virtues of the Muslim community. The verses describe the victory at Khaybar, the mighty God as comforter of true believers and punisher of hypocrites, loyalty to Muhammad as loyalty to God, the Bedouin Arabs’ treachery at Hudaybiya and subsequent hypocrisy, their refusal of a share of the booty taken at Khaybar, the exemption of those incapacitated from war, the reward of Muslim fidelity at Hudaybiya by the victory at Khaybar and spoils taken, the assurance of many spoils to believers even though God prevented the plunder of Mecca, God’s sparing of Mecca in the expedition to Hudaybiya out of compassion, and the conquest of Mecca as divine attestation to Muhammad’s apostleship and the religion of Islam.
