Voice actors in Germany’s dubbing industry are urging regulatory measures as artificial intelligence threatens the quality and job security of their work. Eberhard Weckerle, managing director of a Munich‑based studio that has worked on the German version of *Conclave* and Guy Ritchie’s latest film, argues that AI‑generated voices lack the emotional nuance and variation that human actors bring to a performance. He warns that cost‑cutting could compromise production standards. Dubbing remains culturally significant in markets such as Germany, Italy, and France, where audiences prefer it over subtitles and voice actors often have dedicated fan followings. Researchers predict the global dubbing market will almost double to $7.6 billion by 2033, prompting calls for the EU to protect quality, jobs, and artists’ back catalogs from AI exploitation. Stefan Sporn, CEO of Audio Innovation Lab, acknowledges that AI will reshape the industry but believes humans will still be needed to provide emotion and script support, even if their role is reduced.
