On December 17, 2025, thousands of agitated investors gathered outside the Baoshan Police Bureau in Shanghai, chanting slogans such as "Release the chairman" and holding signs demanding the release of Wu Fengqin, the former chairman of Xi Ai Group, who had been arrested for alleged illegal fundraising. The protesters, who had previously invested billions in Wu’s high‑yield schemes through apps like Aixinghe and Aixing Youxuan, had turned from demanding punishment for the fraud to pleading for Wu’s freedom, hoping that he would return their money once released. They view the police as incapable of recovering their funds and see Wu’s release as their only remaining hope. Wu, a former party member who had built a reputation as a political figure and rural development advocate, had launched the Xi Ai Health Technology Group in 2017 and later promoted the Aixinghe marketplace, promising daily returns of 1%–1.27% and annualized rates of 365%–466%. After the scheme collapsed in November 2025, the investors’ demands shifted dramatically, reflecting their desperation and mistrust of the legal system.
