Buildings surrounded by water after tsunami warning issued

Water enveloped buildings in the Russian town of Severo‑Kurilsk after an enormous, magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck the region early on the morning of July 30. The tremor hit southeast of Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, according to the US Geological Survey. Russia’s state‑owned news agency TASS, citing the country’s Unified Geophysical Service, said it was the strongest earthquake the region had experienced since 1952.
