On March 19, 2015, the lecture began with a discussion of the history of Madhyamaka, highlighting how Indian and Tibetan authorities understood it differently and encouraging listeners to think independently rather than blindly following teachers. The speakers opened with a poignant Pali canon quote from the Samyutta Nikaya, illustrating how future monks might neglect deep sutras in favor of more appealing but less profound teachings. They then examined the challenges of terminology, noting that key terms such as TRUE or BEING can be used in opposite senses by the same author. The discussion moved to the concept of emptiness before Nagarjuna, covering Madhyamaka and Shunyavada, and how the teaching of emptiness was presented in the Pali canon prior to Nagarjuna. Finally, the speakers briefly addressed Nagarjuna’s life and works. The lecture was held at the Buddhist Center of Aryadeya (FPMT).
