In this video, Jeremy Cioara explains the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), the routing protocol that underpins the Internet. BGP discovers all routes on the Internet and distributes them globally, but it is primarily designed for service providers and enterprise customers rather than individual households. Unlike small home routers, BGP allows providers to peer into their neighbors’ routing tables and determine where to send traffic for their users. Rather than handling individual routers, BGP operates at the level of autonomous systems, which can contain hundreds of routers. It evaluates routes based on factors such as weight, local preference, local routes, and the shortest autonomous system path. Because BGP updates propagate slowly, changes such as a new domain registration or a server outage can take days to reach every corner of the Internet. 0:05: Overview 0:25: How internet service providers use BGP 1:25: BGP manages trust and untrust 2:40: BGP routes through autonomous systems, not routers 3:45: BGP's path determination survey 4:45: The factors that get considered in BGP routing 5:05: BGP is the slowest routing protocol in the world 6:10: Google "BGP Looking Glass" for insight
