An 18‑year‑old trainee, Opemipo Jaji, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of eight years after he raped an 11‑year‑old girl. Jaji followed the victim from a bus stop, forced her into a housing estate, and later took her to Jubilee Park in Enfield where he repeatedly raped her, threatening to kill her when she tried to escape. The judge at the Old Bailey noted that Jaji had been planning the attack for two months and that a lesser sentence would not adequately protect the public. Jaji had previously received a supervision order for making indecent images of children and had been convicted of sexual assault and robbery of a 12‑year‑old schoolgirl. He denied the rape charge but was found guilty after the child gave evidence via videolink during the trial.
