During the early days of the 1917 revolution, the Russian Orthodox Church’s Synod, led by Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev and later by the new prosecutor Lvov, declared that the Church had shed the tsar’s patronage. On March 4 the Synod removed the tsar’s chair from the hall, and Archbishop Arsenius of Novgorod proclaimed the removal of the symbol of tsar‑papism. The following day the Synod annulled the “Long Life” prayer for the Romanovs and began to pray for the “God‑protected Russian state and the legitimate Provisional Government.” By March 7 the Church referred to the Romanov family as “the former rulers,” and on March 8 the imperial family was arrested and sent to Siberia. The Synod, claiming the revolution was “by God’s will,” urged the faithful to recognize the Provisional Government, while some clergy, such as Bishop Sylvester in Omsk, read prayers to release the faithful from loyalty to the former tsar. The Church’s stance, which ignored the tsar’s abdication and the oath of allegiance, contributed to the erosion of its authority during the upheaval.
