In Slavic tradition, December 31st is marked by the celebration of Shchedric, a night of brotherhood among the months. Men gather for feasts, passing the symbolic icy staff from the aging December to the youthful January. The custom of decorating firs dates back to ancient times, when people believed the trees housed benevolent spirits of fertility. Children, youth, and adults sing carols, and the festival, known as Melanka, involves choosing a master prankster and dressing him in women's rags. The holiday, rooted in pre‑Christian customs, continues to be celebrated with songs, feasts, and communal joy.
