In 1946, Mikhail Ivanovich Govorov arrives at an orphanage to take his daughter Lilia, who has a concussion and cannot speak. He brings her home, but his wife Margarita resents him for an affair and refuses to accept Lilia. Govorov insists on raising her, even registering Rita as her mother. He consults with Evsey Ilyich about treating Lilia's concussion, and later is appointed to manage a factory and the orphanage. The family moves into an old house known as the House of Lilies, where Lilia begins to speak after a minefield explosion. Six years later, Lilia attends school, and family tensions rise: her brother Kotya burns ammunition, injuring himself; Margarita beats Lilia; Govorov confronts the family, demands apologies, and sends Konstantin to a military school. The story follows the family's struggles and Lilia's growth.
