Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas in Bethlehem

Christians from Orthodox denominations gather in Bethlehem for Christmas Eve on Monday, January 6. The event focuses on the Church of the Nativity, believed to mark the birthplace of Jesus, with processions expected through Manger Square. Coptic, Syrian and other Orthodox Christians observe Christmas on January 7, following the Julian calendar, as opposed to Roman Catholics and Protestants who celebrate on December 25. For the second year in a row, large-scale celebrations are cancelled due to the ongoing war in Gaza, with no lights, Christmas tree, or festive music in the square for December 25 either.
