PERPIGNAN - Old Town Walking Tour

Perpignan, also known as Perpinyà in Catalan, is a city in Southern France with a population of around 150,000 inhabitants. It is the southernmost city in mainland France, located 13 km from the Mediterranean Sea, 30 km from the Spanish border, and 60 km from the Pyrenees mountains. The climate is Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot, dry summers; average high temperatures range from 14–15 °C in winter to 31–32 °C in summer. Perpignan is the capital of Northern Catalonia, a historic Catalan-speaking territory ceded to France by Spain in 1659 after the Treaty of the Pyrenees. Street signs are bilingual French/Catalan, and the Catalan flag can be seen waving throughout the city, although few people speak Catalan today and the Catalan identity is not as strong as in Girona or Barcelona. The city has faced challenges such as high unemployment and poverty, and some areas, like the Saint Jacques gypsy neighborhood, are known for crime and litter.
